If you are looking for a cost-effective, powerful, and user friendly UML tool you could use to come up with a variety of diagrams, then I recommend you to give the Dušan Rodina-developed application Software Ideas Modeler a try. This lightweight, yet powerful application will not disappoint you.

To get started with Software Ideas Modeler, you must download a 2.4MB installation file onto your system. Run the file and a setup wizard will be displayed on your screen; click your way through the prompts it presents and you will be done with installing Software Ideas Modeler in very little time.

The first time you run Software Ideas Modeler, you will be asked to pick one of the multiple languages it supports, and you will be asked to choose one of the two editions: Professional, which is free for non-commercial use, or Ultimate, which is free to try for a trial period of 30-days. If you’re going to use Software Ideas Modeler for commercial purposes, you’re going to have to get a license, no matter which edition you choose.

The interface is typical of an application of the sorts. Right in the middle, there’s a large pane that displays the diagram you’re working on. To the left, right, and above, there are buttons for all the various functions Software Ideas Modeler has to offer. If you have any problems understanding how the application works, check out the user guide, tutorials, and diagram presentations available on the Software Ideas Modeler website.

As mentioned above, you can choose between the Professional and Ultimate edition of Software Ideas Modeler. The free Professional version provides access to all diagram types (UML diagrams, BPMN diagrams, and other diagrams), source code parsing, reverse engineering, export to multiple formats, XMI import and export, simple task management, styling, and printing. The free to try Ultimate edition provides access to all the features mentioned above and these extras: aliases, cooperation tools, project comparison, graphics editor, source code template editor, documentation template editor, and glossary.

Software Ideas Modeler has a lot to boast about: it is user friendly, has powerful features, lets you easily create all sorts of diagrams, supports numerous languages, and more.

Pros

It will take little time to download and install Software Ideas Modeler on your Windows PC. Support for multiple languages is provided. Choose between Software Ideas Modeler Professional which is free for non-commercial use or Software Ideas Modeler Ultimate which you can use for free for a trial period of 30 days. UML diagrams, BPMN diagrams, and various other diagram types. Export as various formats. Online help is available.

Cons
